Archival holdings consist of textual records, photographs, moving images and sound recordings in over 625 fonds and collections.

  • Extent: ca.550 linear metres.
  • Inclusive dates: 1825 - present.
  • Predominant dates: 1880s - 1980s.
    The Library collection includes in excess of 4400 books, 2300 pamphlets, 125 journal titles and 1000 maps, as well as brochure and clipping files, microforms, audiovisual and electronic materials.

The Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies was established in 1966 to serve the unique mountain regions of western Canada. The mandate of the Archives & Library division is to acquire and provide access to archival and published material created in or pertaining to the region bounded by the 49th parallel, Peace River, Front Ranges and Columbia Mountains. Major holdings include the Alpine Club of Canada fonds, 1906-, and the Peter and Catharine Whyte fonds, 1856-1980. Research strengths centre around mountain areas, mountaineering, recreation, biography, arts and culture, environment, family life, national parks, tourism, business, transportation, natural history and resources.

Tuesday to Friday: 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM.;

  • Closed weekends, statutory holidays, Family Day (Feb) and Heritage Day (Aug). Closure may also occur during short holiday periods and/or because of unforeseen staffing issues.
