Administrative history

The Welcome Wagon Club of Grande Prairie was founded in the early 1960s to help newcomers to Grande Prairie adjust to a new community. Welcome Wagon hostesses visit new residents and present them with information about city services and organizations, as well as with gifts and cards from the merchants sponsoring Welcome Wagon. They answer any questions the client may have about their new community and may extend an invitation to join the club and meet other newcomers. Besides their club meetings and social occasions, the club members get involved with service projects such as helping the Jaycettes with patterning children with cerebral palsy and brain damage, making blankets for Peace School of Hope, canvassing for worthwhile causes, and helping with community services such as Meals on Wheels and Moms and Tots. They raise funds to support these causes through events such as craft and bake sales, fashion shows, dances and suppers. The local Grande Prairie club is affiliated with Welcome Wagon International.

Custodial history

Records donated by Helen Rice, club member of the Welcome Wagon.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of one scrapbook chronicling Welcome Wagon activities from 1965 to 1972 and containing membership lists, newsclippings, photographs, cards and letters from appreciative club members, meeting announcements, posters from fund-raisers, and correspondence regarding their involvement with the Peace School of Hope and the Patterning Project. A separate file contains Club Calendar announcements from 1970.
