Biographical history

On August 18, 1887, W.S. Caine of England, Member of Parliament (MP) for Barrow, departed on an around-the-world trip with his eldest daughter. He wrote a series of letters home, which were published in an English newspaper. During his travels he crossed Canada and visited Winnipeg, Manitoba, Calgary, Alberta and Banff, Alberta.

Custodial history

The scrapbook was held by the Glenbow Library until being transferred to the Archives in 1982.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of scrapbook of published letters regarding Caine's trip. Includes other newsclippings from English newspapers about emigration, various colonization schemes, and conditions in the Canadian West.
