Administrative history

In 1989 the Graduate Nursing Students Association struck an ad hoc committee with the aim of ensuring the establishment of a PhD program in Nursing at the University of Alberta. While the University had approved such a program in 1986 "subject to available funding," no funding had been provided. Members of the committee, believing that doctoral preparation in nursing was essential for the advancement of the profession, began lobbying for financial support for the program. The title "The Nursing PhD Program: A Reality" (NPPR) was adopted for the committee. In addition to lobbying the University and the Provincial Government, members sought the support of the private sector, including corporations, businesses, foundations and individuals. On December 21, 1990 approval and funding of the program was announced.

Custodial history

The records were retained by Dr. Ginette Rodger, one of the people instrumental in securing the University's approval of the doctoral program in nursing. She is a graduate of the program. The records were transferred to the Alberta Association of Registered Nurses Archives and Museum by Dr. Rodger in 1992.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of minutes and agendas; notes and reports, including lobbying strategies; financial records; 1 photograph, 1 audiotape cassette, 3 video tapes.
