Administrative history
The Twentieth Century Women's Liberal Club of Edmonton was founded in 1930 to encourage the young women born in the 20th century to take an active interest in the provincial and dominion elections then imminent. Starting with a membership of nearly 200 young women, the club became a potent factor in the political arena. Membership included nurses, teachers, musicians, stenographers, girls and women at home. Members met each month in the club rooms to discuss the problems of the day and the policies advocated by the Liberal leaders to meet these problems. The club wanted to reject old ideas of government and saw the liberal party as a way to bring a new area of prosperity and happiness. The Club also promoted social activities among Liberals and encouraged the study of Canadian history. The Twentieth Century Women's Liberal Club of Edmonton was the local chapter of a national organization. The words Twentieth Century were selected because Sir Wilfrid Laurier, the Liberal leader, considered the twentieth century to be the Century of Canada.
