Biographical history

Theodore ‘Ted’ Herman was of German from Russia descent. It is believed that his great grandparents Herrmann left Germany to farm in Russia under Catherine the Great in the 1830s. His branch of the family, John Herrmann as patriarch, emigrated from Russia in 1911. Their final destination was Irvine, Alberta.

The family was successful as farmers, including John Herrmann’s son, Carl, who married Caroline (nee Kundert) in 1917. One of their sons was Theodore (Ted) Herman (note change of spelling). Ted married Irene Alberta Esping on July 20, 1940, quickly on the heels of the National Reserve Military Act which made all unmarried men over 21 eligible for the draft. Ted was drafted regardless in 1941.

Ted and Irene had 8 children.: Lois, Nolan, Dixie, James, Bernie (who passed in childhood in 1953), Dennis, Bonnie, and Thomas.
The Herman family remained relatively successful in farming. Ted also participated in the community, serving many years on the executive of the Cypress Rural Electrification Association. Irene passed away in 1998. Ted remarried, to Helanda. Ted passed away in 2014.
