The Summer Village of Island Lake was incorporated on January 1, 1958, and is located on the Western shore of Island Lake, Alberta, along Highway 2 and northwest of Athabasca. It is the largest of Alberta’s summer villages by population, which currently stands at 228. The village is named after the many small islands within its area of just under 8.00 km²
The Summer Village of Island Lake is governed by a Mayor, two Councilors and a Chief Administrative Officer, who are responsible for bylaws, budgets and financials, minutes and newsletters, and all other administrative and governance duties. The Summer Village is also a part of the Athabasca-Sturgeon-Redwater provincial constituency.
“Summer Village” is a municipal status used in Alberta since 1913, which is applied to incorporated communities that have permanent populations generally less than 300 permanent inhabitants, as well as seasonal (non-permanent) inhabitants. In 1995, provincial legislation was changed to prevent the formation of new summer villages, though the 54 summer villages that existed at the time were permitted to continue to operate as before. There are currently 51 operating summer villages in Alberta, including Island Lake.
Custodial history
The records were in the custody of Anita Blais, a former Summer Village administrator, prior to their donation to the Provincial Archives in 2013.
Scope and content
The records include municipal governance, planning and administrative records including tax documents, property files, financial reports, cash ledgers, minutes, correspondence, environmental studies and development proposals, and other similar documents. These serve as evidence of the regular activities and history of The Summer Village of Island Lake since its incorporation in 1958.
