History

"Grande Prairie Regional Archives" was established in January 2000 as an interim project while negotiations to form a permanent regional archives for the south Peace River District were on-going. The archives is sponsored by the Grande Prairie Museum, City of Grande Prairie, County of Grande Prairie, the Municipal District of Greenview, and the Municipal District of Spirit River. Its purpose is to promote and encourage the appreciation and study of the history of the south Peace by acquiring, preserving and making accessible to the public, records in any format which reflect the history of this area. Since 2007, South Peace Regional Archives has been operated by the South Peace Regional Archives Society.

Geographical and cultural context

South Peace Regional Archives is responsible for acquiring, preserving, and making accessible the documentary heritage of the entire south Peace region, including the areas contained within the City of Grande Prairie, County of Grande Prairie, Municipal District of Greenview, Municipal District of Spirit River, Saddle Hills County, and Birch Hills County.

Mandates/Sources of authority

The mandate of South Peace Regional Archives is to acquire, preserve and make accessible to the public records of on-going value from individuals, families, businesses and organizations, which reflect the political, social and economic life of the south Peace River Country of Alberta. These records are in all formats and media, including textual records, photographs, films, sound recordings, maps, plans and drawings.

Administrative structure

South Peace Regional Archives is governed by a Board of Directors including representatives from the funding municipalities (City of Grande Prairie, County of Grande Prairie, Municipal District of Greenview, and Municipal District of Spirit River) and interested community members. Permanent Archives staff includes an Executive Director, Archivist, and Archives Technician.

Records management and collecting policies

South Peace Regional Archives seeks to acquire archival materials from local municipalities, businesses, organizations, families, and individuals by transfer and gift.

Buildings

The head office of the South Peace Regional Archives is located in the Grande Prairie Museum, which is located in Muskoseepi Park.

Holdings

Total Volume: 100 linear metres of textual materials, 60,000 photographs, audio visual material, maps, library of reference material, and newspapers. <BR>Inclusive Dates: 1834 - 2011 (predominant dates: 1920 - 1960).

Closed February 1, 2024 through May 1, 2024 for relocation.

Researchers are requested to contact the Archives to schedule an appointment. There are no fees for in-person research. A research fee may be charged for lengthy long-distance research requests.
