Biographical history
Shirley M. Stinson, BSc (Alberta), MNA (Minnesota), EdD (Columbia), Professor Emeritus, Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta, began her career as a public health nurse in Alberta. She was later appointed associate director of nursing service at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children. Dr. Stinson was the first woman to hold a National Senior Health Research Scientist Award (1972). Among her many other awards are Columbia University's Nursing Education Alumni Association Award for Leadership in professional activities; the Jeanne Mance Award from the Canadian Nurses Association; two awards from the Government of Alberta: the Alberta Achievement Award for Excellence (1982) and the Sir Frederick Haultain Award in Humanities (1990); numerous nursing awards for leadership and two honourary doctorates from Canadian universities. Dr. Stinson is an internationally recognized nursing leader, a past president of the Canadian Nursing Association and an honourary member of the AARN. Her particular contributions to the nursing profession are in the areas of education, health administration and research.

The fonds consists of personal and professional records, including course materials for Masters and PhD studies; materials collected at the Hospital for Sick Children; materials relating to development of the health administration program and the nursing PhD program at the University of Alberta, and to the development of nursing research programs provincially and nationally; correspondence with the Kellogg Foundation; records of work with the World Health Organization; records of her presidency of the Canadian Nursing Association; speeches; publications; photographs.
