Fonds luth-2076 - Shepherd King Lutheran Church fonds

The established Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod congregations in Calgary considered it a priority to do mission work for synod in the newly developing neighbourhoods in the 1950s. In March 1959 consecrated workers met under the leadership of Vicar Lenard Galiter of Jehovah Lutheran Church. Sunday School and Bible Classes were held in the Kingsland Elementary School auditorium. Interest in services was high and in the fall of 1959 Pastor Kenneth Putt was called and soon a constitution was adopted. They selected the name Shepherd King at a meeting in October and began construction of a church which was completed in November 1959. The congregation continued growing for several years and by the 1970s was looking for a solution to their building needs. Other churches in Calgary, such as Mount Calvary (and the Evangelical Lutheran Church Canada congregations of First Lutheran and Trinity) had large and valuable properties but declining memberships, and others were seeking again to move into new neighbourhoods. Discussions led to merger talks and in 1981 three Calgary congregations amalgamated to form the Lutheran Triune Congregation of Calgary which planned to operate in three locations to serve a variety of needs and eventually became part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada.
