Biographical history
Anton Sr. Schacher was the son of George Conrad and Elizabeth (nee Eichle) Schacher and was born in Russia in 1870. He married Katherine Reule (born. 1873) and they had 11 children: Anton Jr. (Tony), Jacob, Ernestina, Gordon, Israel (Rolly), Andrew, Bernard, Gustav, Henry, Emma, and Fred. After Anton Sr.'s eldest boys were threatened with military service in the Russian Army, he moved his family to Canada in 1911 to Walsh, Alberta where he set up a homestead in the Graburn Area. Anton Sr. passed away in 1944 and Katherine in 1945. Both are buried in Hillside Cemetary in Medicine Hat.
Andrew Schacher was born in Demotrovka, Russia on July 10, 1903. At an early age he went to work for the CPR and when he was 17 returned home to help his father, Anton Sr., work on the farm. On November 6, 1925 he married Leah Boschee and purchased land from his father. On September 10, 1926, their son Allen Roy was born. They purchased more land in 1928 on which the Cypress School and Teacherage existed. Over the next couple of decades they continued to purchase more land and in 1947 they built a house in Medicine Hat and in 1952 built a second house in the city. Andrew passed away May 2, 1974 and Leah, July 31, 2000.
