Administrative history

The Red Deer Board of Trade was founded in 1894 in Red Deer, N.W.T. Its objects were to improve and promote the Red Deer District commercially and municipally. It was incorporated in 1911 as the "Red Deer Board of Trade or Chamber of Commerce" but continued to use the Board of Trade name. In 1953 its name was changed to Red Deer Chamber of Commerce

Custodial history

The 1894-1909 minute book was loaned by the Board of Trade to the Red Deer Advocate newspaper in 1934. It was thrown out by the Advocate staff around 1954 but was retrieved by an unknown person who gave it to the Red Deer author Kerry Wood. Wood donated it to the Calgary-based Glenbow Foundation in 1956. The Glenbow-Alberta Institute, as it was then called, transferred it to the Red Deer and District Archives in 1993

Scope and content

The fonds consists of minutes of the Red Deer Board of Trade and Red Deer Chamber of Commerce (1894-1909, 1940-1962, 1965-1975); a copy of its petition for incorporation (1911), membership lists, photographs of events and social activities (ca. 1986-ca. 1992), and publications (1988)
