Biographical history
Samuel Leonard Tilley Rankin (born August 8, 1855) worked for the Dominion Land Titles office in Regina (from ?-1888) and later transferred to Winnipeg, before settling his family in Maple Creek. Samuel Rankin married Maggie Annie Bole. The Rankin family had close ties with another pioneering family of Maple Creek; the Dixon family. Samuel Rankin was employed by the Dixon family at the Dixon General Store upon coming to Maple Creek (1889?), and named one of his sons Leonard Dixon Rankin (born in Maple Creek on May 25, 1891), to pay homage to the friendship between the Rankins and the Dixons. Samuel and Maggie had at least six children: Annie Bowman Rankin (born 1888 in Regina), James Henry Melville Rankin (born October 14, 1889 in Maple Creek), Leonard Dixon Rankin, Gertrude M. Rankin (born December 12, 1893 in Maple Creek), Marie E. S. Rankin (born May 13, 1895 in Maple Creek) and Leila Fraser Rankin (born November 7, 1897 in Maple Creek). While it is uncertain how long the family stayed in the Maple Creek area, Samuel L. T. Rankin was still operating as a civil servant in the area in 1911.
