History

Moshe Ber Lazarowich Pollack, age 27 (d. 1962) from the village of Gorodnia married Chana Davidovna Hanyler (d. 1975) from the village of Solorkowich on June 30, 1920, at the village of Zinkowa, Russia. Their eldest son David was born August 26, 1921, the day after his parents arrived in Edmonton. Moshe ran a dry goods store on Whyte Avenue, where he helped out. David attended the University of Alberta, earning his Bachelor and Masters of Science in Zoology in 1946. He taught Biology at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario before returning to Edmonton. In Edmonton, he went back to school and graduated as a Pharmacist from the U of A in 1953. He opened his first Pharmacy on 95th St., later opening Regent Drug Store on 104 St. north of Whyte Avenue. David's brother Hymie had his medical office next door, and his parent's General Store was the next door down from that. Hymie graduated from the U of A in medicine in 1948 and practiced as a family physician on the south side for many years. David married Chana on August 26, 1982. Hymie married Shoshana, and their son Shai was born in 1981. David and Hymie were life-long members of the Beth Israel Synagogue, and were founding members of the Jewish Community Centre, as well as being generous donors to the Jewish National Fund. Hymie passed away in 1989, David on September 23, 1997.
