Biographical history

Perryvale is a district 20 km south of the Town of Athabasca. In 1953, ten residents of the district banded together to form the Perryvale Rural Electrification Association Limited (Perryvale R.E.A.) with M. Lehto as the first President. Incorporated under the Province of Alberta's Co-operative Associations Act of 1946, the mandate of the Perryvale R.E.A. was: the purchase of electric power and energy; the construction and operation of an electric power distribution system for supplying electric power and energy to the members of the association; the sale and distribution of electric power and energy to the members of the Association for domestic and farm use; and the borrowing of money and securing the repayment thereof and the granting if such security on the assets of the company as the directors may be from time to time determine. Membership was offered through the payment of a membership fee of one dollar and the entering in of a contract with the Association for the purchase of electric power. In 1998, the Perryvale R.E.A. was purchased by Transalta Corporation.
