Administrative history

Old Sun Industrial School was constructed on the Blackfoot (Siksika) reserve in southern Alberta in the 1890s. After it was destroyed by fire a three-story brick Old Sun Residential School was built in 1929. It was operated by the Anglican Church of Canada until 1968 when native students transferred to local public schools. The building was reopened in 1971 as the Old Sun Campus of Mount Royal College and in March 1973 became an autonomous organization operated by the Blackfoot. Mount Royal College continued to perform business functions for the college under contract. The program of the college as it developed included life skills, upgrading, secretarial, clerk-typist, apprenticeship welding, and agricultural mechanics. In 1973-1974 Mount Royal College credit courses were added to the curriculum. Most of the funding comes from the Federal Department of Indian Affairs.
