Biographical history

Norman C. Lindhjem was born on October 14, 1916. He was a member of the 87th Mountain Infantry Detachment and in 1942 was sent on special orders to Lake Louise, AB to be part of the Columbia Icefield Expedition. The expedition was part of classified military training involving specialized alpine and winter training and for the Canada - Weasel test program. The Studebaker Weasel was a military vehicle developed by Studebaker and based on designs and research by Geoffrey Pyke, also responsible for the Habbakuk project. The expedition began in July of 1942 ended in late October of 1942 and Lindhjem returned to Fort Lewis, Washington and then was sent on detachment to Jolon, California and then he was sent to Camp Hale, Colorado. Lindhjem currently resides in Bend, Oregon and is retired from the military. He is the current director for the International World Calendar Association

Robert W. Sandford was contacted by Norman C. Lindhjem regarding a manuscript about the Studebaker Weasel and World War II test programs that had occurred in Banff and Jasper National Parks and passed along research, photographs and a manuscript to Sandford to donate to the Jasper Yellowhead Museum and Archives on Lindhjem's behalf

Scope and content

The fonds consists of various correspondence and research between Norman C. Lindhjem, Robert E. McDonald, Robert W. Sandford, and the Denver Public Library. The fonds also consists of an annotated copy of a manuscript written by McDonald about the Studebaker Weasel, a military vehicle. The fonds also consists of photographs of the 87th Mountain Infantry Detachment's time at Lake Louis and the Columbia Icefields; Lindhjem's participation in the training and testing program. The fonds also consists of a videocassette of copied film footage of the Weasel.
