Biographical history

The National Party of Canada was formed by Mel Hurtig and a small group of supporters in order to end federal political patronage, democratize the election process, and to seek for a renewed national economic vision. In 1993 the Red Deer Constituency Association was created in order to run a candidate in the 1993 federal general election. Don Hepburn was elected as association president and Jean Hepburn, his wife, ran unsuccessfully in the October 25, 1993 election. The Association became moribund after an endless series of factional schisms and squabbles within the National Party's leadership. After a convention in June 1994 there were two groups contending for control of the party. The Chief Electoral Officer dissolved the National Party in December 1994; and the decision was upheld by the Federal Court in 1998. The Red Deer Constituency Association disbanded in 2000
