Biographical history
Matheson Alexander Lang, 1879-1948, was a Canadian-born stage and film actor and playwright in the early 20th century. He is best remembered for his performances in Great Britain in Shakespeare plays. He went on to appear in over 30 films and was one of Britain's leading movie stars of the 1920s. In 1926 he travelled from England to Canada on the SS Montrose for a Canadian Tour, followed by a season in New York. In Canada, he crossed the country on the Canadian Pacific Railway.
Custodial history
Scope and content
The fonds consists of a souvenir photograph album of the trip, possibly kept by G. Mayor-Cooke, the General Manager of Lang's company. Includes 31 snapshots of Lang, Mayor-Cooke and the rest of the company on board ship, and in locations enroute including Whitefisth Lake (Ontario), Winnipeg, Regina, and Edmonton; and 25 scenes along the route of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) across the country from Quebec City to the West Coast. Most of the latter are commercial prints taken by Brigden Photos.
