History
Jim (James) Marshall has been a long-standing contributor to the preservation of heritage in Medicine Hat, through his art, his organization, and his advocacy.
Born (1939) and raised in Medicine Hat, Jim taught himself much about art, but has also trained in graphic arts and lithograohy at Ryerson (Toronto), Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (Calgary), Kodak School (Rochester, NY).
His employemnt has included working with the family printing firm of Val Marshall Printing, marketing with I-XL Industires, has been a director of of the Alberta Masonry Institute, consultant with the International Masonry Institute, and for the Masonry Contractors Association of Alberta.
Artistically, Jaim's specialization has been pen and ink drawings, largely of historic landscapes and structures, as well as carving and sculpting using bricks.
Jim has also been a long-standing advocate for the preservation of Medicine Hat's built heritage, as an individual, working with the Historicla Society of Medicine Hat and District, and the Historical Resources Committee, serving as its chair through its founding in 1984 through 1986.
