Biographical history
The Marquess of Lorne, 1845-1914, was the Governor-General of Canada from 1878 to 1883. In 1881 he became the first of Canada's Governors-General to visit the western Canadian prairies. The three month expedition left Quebec on July 18, 1881, travelling by the still unfinished Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), canoe, steamboat and carriage. The expedition visited Fort Ellice, Fort Carlton, Prince Albert, Battleford, Qu'Appelle, Calgary, Fort Macleod, and Waterton. For further information see Rev. Scope and content
The fonds consists of a microfilm of newspaper reports, published in The Times and The Scotsman, about Lord Lorne's tour. Includes an 1883 letter from Lord Castletown, describing a trip by CPR from Winnipeg to Calgary. The fonds also consists of photographs of sketches done during the 1881 trip, along with original 1870s sketches of European castles and scenes (possibly done by Princess Louise), which had been glued to the back of these photos. Includes a scrapbook of newspaper clippings written by Reverend James MacGregor who accompanied Lorne.
