Biographical history

Manoly Robert Lupul was born on August 14, 1927 in Willingdon, Alberta. He married Natalie Victoria Goreseky and had two children, David William and Elaine Anne, and has four grandchildren, Lesya, Stefan, Tanya, and Sabrina. He received a B.A. in Honours History at the University of Alberta in 1950, a B.Ed. at the same institution in 1951, an M.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1955, and a Ph.D. from Harvard with a major in History and Philosophy of Education and a minor in Political Science in 1963. He was employed as a junior high social studies teacher in Alberta from 1951-1954, as a sessional lecturer at Boston University, Massachusetts, from 1957-1958, and as academic staff at the University of Alberta from 1958-1990. In 1970 he was made a professor in the Department of Educational Foundations and he was also the founding director of the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, the first publicly funded institution of its kind outside Ukraine, a position he held from 1976-1986. He served as an executive member of the Canadian Consultative Council on Multiculturalism and as a member of the Alberta Cultural Heritage Council and contributed to the development of the multiculturalism section of the Canadian Constitution. He was awarded the Order of Canada in 2004. His main areas of research involve the education of minorities in western Canada, the relationship between multiculturalism and education in Canada, and the history of Ukrainians in Canada, on which he has written extensively for scholarly publications.

Custodial history

Records were donated by Dr. Manoly R. Lupul, a retired professor at the University of Alberta, and deposited in the Provincial Archives in 2008.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of the personal and professional correspondence of Dr. Manoly R. Lupul (1950-2008) including materials relating to his teaching career at the University of Alberta, numerous published materials related to his activities, and photographs and slides (1932-2007). There are also two smaller series within the fonds. The first series consists of materials created and collected by Lupul during his time on the Canadian Consultative Council on Multiculturalism, including various newsletters and other publications produced by the council relating to the official policy of Multiculturalism and its inclusion in the Canadian Constitution (1972-1997). The seconds series consists of materials created and collected by Lupul during his time as the director, and afterwards, of the Canadian Institute for Ukrainian Studies, mainly consisting of the Canadian Institute for Ukrainian Studies newsletter (1976-2008).
