Biographical history

The Commune of Lillehammer, Norway, although it had a population of only 22,000 was the centre of a popular winter recreation region, and its citizens included eight Olympic medallists in the 1980's when it decided to bid to host the Olympic Winter Games. Although the community's bid to host the 1992 Olympic Winter Games was unsuccessful, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded it the 1994 Olympic Winter Games in 1988. General responsibility for organizing the Games and constructing facilities was vested in Lillehammer OL '94 A/S, a corporation controlled by the Norwegian government, with shares also held by the Norwegian Olympic Committee and the Municipality of Lillehammer. It became the head of a group of subsidiary corporations, which included LOOC A/S (Lillehammer Olympic Organizing Committee), responsible for organizing the actual Olympic Games and the associated cultural events; and Lillehammer Olympia Vekst A/S, concerned with regional economic development. In accordance with IOC policy, Lillehammer OL '94 A/S and LOOC A/S were disbanded shortly after the Games. The Lillehammer collection was assembled by the Olympic Hall of Fame and Museum from the undocumented donations of several members of the staff of the Calgary Olympic Development Association (CODA) who attended the 1994 Olympic Winter Games.
