Administrative history
The Lake McGregor Fisherman’s Association, sometimes referred to as the Lake McGregor Fisher’s Association or the Lake McGregor Fishing Association, was established in 1957 by a group of area residents, concerned about various issues affecting the future of fishing in Lake McGregor. The business of the first meeting included the election of a President (Irvin Sukut), Vice-President (John Engen), Secretary-Treasurer (E.R. Barnett), and three Board members (Kenneth Sokvitne, Ole Uland and Allan Vaile); the decision to have the Board of Directors draw up a set of by-laws to be submitted at the next meeting; the setting of a $2.00 membership fee; and an agreement to hold the annual meeting “alternatively” in Lomond and Milo.
A regular feature at the annual meetings was a speech by a government representative, either an MLA or a representative from the Fisheries Department. These speeches were often followed by stimulated discussion on such topics as heavy commercial fishing, high license fees, and quotas.
An undated membership register lists almost 70 names. The Fisherman’s Association held curling bonspiels and sometimes banquets, and, in January 1964, a “Ball” to which they invited their “lady friends”.
