Biographical history
Louis Sherman "Turc" Turcotte, 1904-1983, was born at Grand Mere, Quebec. He moved with his family to Lethbridge and completed his high school education there. He studied at the University of Alberta and was granted a Law degree in 1924. He practised law in the Alberta communities of Vegreville, Cardston, and Lethbridge. He married Agnes Dinwoodie in Vegreville in 1940. Interested in politics, Turcotte was active in the Liberal Party. He was elected to Lethbridge City Council in 1943, and served as Mayor in 1950-1952. In 1955 he was appointed a judge of the District Court of Southern Alberta, and retired from the judiciary as a member of the Alberta Court of Appeal in 1979. Judge Turcotte was the first Chancellor of the University of Lethbridge, serving from 1967 to 1972.

The fonds consists of personal and professional papers of L. S. Turcotte: his writings; vacation souvenirs; university lecture notes and student papers; Rotary Club papers; Liberal Party papers; Southern Alberta Water Conservation Council records; speeches and correspondence from his career in Lethbridge municipal politics; records of significant cases from his legal practice; judge's note books and other records of his judicial career; University of Lethbridge papers; records of provincial commissions of inquiry he chaired concerning alleged irregularities in the Town of Taber, the City of Calgary, and Lethbridge Central Feeders Association; scrapbooks; awards; photographs; and two audio cassettes.
