Studio portrait of local pioneer Carl Schmidt. Born Carl Johanson in Grava Sweden on November 1, 1861, he changed his name to Schmidt after arriving in Canada. He had married Anna Maria Nelson in Sweden and sent for her while he was living in Montreal. He came to the Bittern Lake area east of Wetaskiwin in 1901, and settled in the Harvest Home district.
