Mel Hurtig, left, being presented with the Order of Canada, Officer's Medal by Edward Schrayer, Governor General of Canada. Born and raised in Edmonton, Mel Hurtig operated a small book store which grew into one of the largest retail book operations in Canda. He sold the stores in 1972 and concentrated on publishing. In 1980, he launched the Canadian Encyclopaedia project, first published in 1985. Hurtig Publishers was acquired by McLelland and Stewart in May of 1991. Mel Hurtig is an author and lecturer, who has spoken across Canada and founded the Council of Canadians, a nationalist Canadian Political entity. He was awarded and Honourary Doctor of Laws degree by six universities in addition to numerous other awards.<br><br>
