General note
The site, located 100 km east of Calgary on the Bow River, was excavated under the direction of H.A. Huscher of the Smithsonian Institution. When originally dug with bone tools, the trench was about 31/2 feet deep, and 7 feet across. While it was probably primarily for fortification, it may have also served at a drainage system, protecting the pit houses from flooding.
