Athabasca Archives Oral Interview Project collection

Volunteers at Athabasca Archives, the public archives at Athabasca’s Alice B. Donahue Library and Archives, created an oral interview project to capture the memories of some of the area’s senior citizens. Vi Kowalchuk, Gene Kowalchuk and Annie Rypien were the interviewers and they recorded 30 cassette tapes and transcriptions of the seniors’ recollections.

There are 2 copies of the Sept.21 2001 photo of citizens on the Town Common. Also included is a 1956-60, 1994, and 2005 Business Directory. The photographs include the 1992 Huron-Bruce Voyageurs, and photographs of town buildings. The artifacts include 6 metal dies used to create Athabasca Trade Dollars for the years 1978, 1979, 1981, 1982 and 1985. 10.55: membership lists from 1999 and 2010, and correspondence from 1999 and 2000.

Alice B. Donahue Library and Archives fonds

The fonds consists of materials created by the Alice B. Donahue Library and Archives and its predecessors between 1946 and 2009.The fonds consists of bylaws, minutes, correspondence, financial records, fire insurance policies, account books, membership lists, accession and statistics books. Included in the photographs are: Violet (Mills) Aldridge, Kathy Begoray, Sandy Bulmer, Mike Cardinal, Lionel Cherniwchan, Louis DaCosta, Alice B. Donahue, Teddy Dunn, Frank Falconer, Judy Flax, Jane Gordon, Cynthia Graefe, Barbara Hunter, Joseph William Irwin, Doug and Heather Kariel, Jerry Little, Betty McDonald, Don McGladdery, Joseph Martynek, Marilyn Mol, Phylis Mort, Amanda and Erica Oldale, Viola Elizabeth Overholt (Jouston), Betty Pickett, Irene Robbins, Lydia Silkie, Kathleen Stafford, Linda Steppan, Robert Tannas, Kathy Traynor, David Yowney and Karen Zwarich. The students in a 1990/91 photograph of the Hutterite Colony School visiting the library are: Johnny, Rhoda, Debbie, Walter, Philip, Julia, Edward, Michelle, Steven, Aaron, and Albert Gross, Betty Stahl and Mrs. Phyliss Mort. Other materials transferred to the archives include an essay written by Nadine Molofy for the Correspondence School Branch in 1948-49 which also includes a photograph of W.H.Swift; the 1981 Canada census information on mother tongues spoken in the Athabasca area; and a program of the 3rd Spring Showcase of local talent library fundraiser in c2001. In 2003, photographs were taken when new carpeting was installed in the library and archives. A recent donation of planning materials for Athabasca Pottery Discovery Day, June 21, 2009 includes correspondence, budget, itineraries, media release, and poster proofs. Alex Barr fonds

The fonds consists of a list of banks in Edmonton from September 1891 to December 1938, including the names of managers and terms of office (Edmonton Clearing House 1939) and a programme from the First Annual Dinner of the Old Timers’ Association, 1894 (which would later become the Northern Alberta Pioneer & Old Timers’ Association).

Anderson Family fonds

The fonds consists of a diary belonging to Robert’s second wife, Margaret ‘Greta’ McPherson (Grant) Anderson and papers relating to the birth registration of their son Malcolm Robert Anderson (b 19 Apr 1920). There is also a poem written by Robert Thompson Anderson, Our Capital Town, about the city of Edmonton and apparently read at annual events in the fire department.

The photographs include the Anderson home and family members, Edmonton street scenes and events, and the Edmonton Fire Department and Health Department.

The fonds also includes Robert’s published works, The Old Timer and Other Poems (819 AND), Canadian Born and other Western Verse (819 AND 1913 c.3) and Troopers in France (819 AND 1932).
