Grande Prairie School Construction

Construction of the Grande Prairie School, July 31, 1917. It was built on land donated by Rev. Forbes and named Montrose after Mrs. Forbes birth place in Scotland.

Image shows a woman on horseback, beside another horse, standing in front of the Roman Catholic Church and cemetery. The first Roman Catholic Mission to be established in the Grande Prairie District was built by Father Alac with the aid of Brother Mathias about 1909. The Catholic population at this time consisted of about 20 Cree families located around the Flying Shot Lake area. The title is taken from the caption on the back of the photograph.

Grande Prairie Fire

People trying to save items from the fire include a man in a R.C.M. P. uniform . Plumes of smoke appear to be coming from the building to the left of the City Pool Hall. Note on the back of the postcard reads: From: Mrs. Mary E. Davidson, Sooke Road, Sooke B.C. formerly Clendenan -daughter of pioneers Thomas & Lila Clendenan of Bear Lake, Alta., who lived on Bear Lake from 1909-1923.
