Blaine Canadian sports history collection

  • CA MRUASC C0011
  • Collection
  • 1906-2019

Collection documents the history of professional, amateur, and varsity/collegiate sport in Canada, particularly hockey, football, baseball, golf, and rodeo. The collection illustrates the development of these sports in the 20th and early 21st centuries (the period from the 1940s to the 1990s is particularly well-documented), and focuses on Canadian leagues as well as international leagues in which Canadian teams participated. Most of the collection relates to Canadian teams and athletes (although American teams are also well-represented), with a particular focus on Alberta and Western Canada.

The collection largely consists of publications, ephemera, and promotional objects including: game and tournament programs, photographs, magazines, media guides, yearbooks, schedules, calendars, trading cards, game tickets, pins and buttons, pennants, patches, and decals.

The collection is arranged into 5 series by sport: hockey, football, baseball, golf, and rodeo (devoted to the Calgary Stampede). The collection was meticulously organized and documented by the donor Bob Blaine, with most of the collection housed in binders that are arranged by level of competition (professional, amateur, varsity/collegiate), league, date range, and type of material. The contents of each binder are further arranged, typically by material type and date, and many items are accompanied by detailed supplementary contextual information provided by Blaine.

The 1982 Canadian Everest Expedition Collection

  • CA pfla EV
  • Collection
  • 1975-2018, predominant 1982-1983

The collection consists of a broad range of records and media generated throughout all stages of the 1982 Canadian Everest Expedition, from the advance promotional and logistical preparations in Canada and Nepal through to the realization of the expedition in Nepal, and post-trip presentations within Canada. These materials were primarily assembled by Jim Muir, whose Montreal-based company Programmed Communications Limited was in charge of organizing and maintaining the expedition’s photographs and slides, as well as developing presentations and other promotional activities.

The collection is divided into 6 series and two sous-fonds, with the arrangement reflecting the diversity of the types of materials accumulated, as well as the organization of Muir’s own administrative files. The collection includes Muir’s correspondence and administrative papers from the expedition, press clippings and selected publications related to the expedition, photographs and slides taken by expedition team members and other press affiliates in Canada, Nepal, and on other training climbs around the world, film and video (both raw footage shot in Nepal by expedition members, as well as news programs and promotional presentations), and a vast selection of audio material (both field recordings and Base Camp transmissions, as well as more-formally produced presentations and radio programs). One sous-fonds contains oral history interviews that archives practicum Abigail Sebaly has conducted with expedition team members and affiliates in 2018.

Kathryn Chase Merrett fonds

  • CA EDM MS-589
  • Fonds
  • 1993-2018

The fonds consists of material created through Merrett’s work in compiling local histories of Edmonton. These include research and writings on the Edmonton City Market, the horticultural scene in Edmonton and the Cross Cancer Institute.

The majority of the records deal with research for a book on the Edmonton City Market (A History of the Edmonton City Market, 1900-200: Urban Values and Urban Culture) and political activism relating to a two-year fight to retain a City Market in the downtown. Research undertaken on Edmonton’s gardening history and publications based upon that research is also present. These records include transcripts of interviews conducted by Merrett with vendors and others associated with the Edmonton City Market, and a record of a two-year political process during which the Edmonton City Market building on 97th Street was closed and replaced by an outdoor market on 104th Street. The interviews, most of which are rendered in the voices of the interviewees, cover a variety of subjects relating to life in Edmonton from the 1930s through the 1960s and 1970s. The record of the 2002-2004 period in the City Market’s history includes correspondence, newspaper clippings, a photocopy of a petition presented to City Council, and meeting minutes. There are also photographs of some of the interviewees.

The records of the horticultural scene in Edmonton include Merrett's research on Edmonton's gardening history and articles written by Merrett for the Edmonton Horticultural Society's (EHS) newsletter, The Gardener's Gate. There is also a copy of Merrett's published work on gardening in Edmonton - Why We Grow Here: Essays on Edmonton's Gardening History.

The fonds also includes two publications from Merrett’s work with the Cross Cancer Institute. These items represent the commissioning of Merrett to write a history of the medical centre, as well as a history of the volunteer program there over the first 50 years of its existence.
