Across the Smoky

Across the Smoky is the history of the early settlers “who passed ‘Across the Smoky’ and were brave enough to stay long enough to leave their mark” in the district from Smoky River to Sturgeon Lake, comprising those areas served by the post offices of Goodwin, DeBolt, Crooked Creek, Clarkson Valley and Sturgeon Heights. Accounts include individual and family histories by date of arrival, poetry, post offices, schools, churches, entertainment, roads, floods and rivers, armed forces, and the Smoky River Bridge. Artwork is by Flora Mehlum and Alice Wilde. The book was edited by Winnie and Fran Moore and printed by Friesen Printers in 1978. A second printing was made in 1996.The series consists of correspondence regarding the writing and printing of the book: the original, hand-written, first person accounts of the settlers or their descendents sent in specifically for this publication; accounts of community organizations compiled from research or memory; a series of township plans showing who was living in the district; lists of photographs and captions used in the publication; a codilith of a drawing used as the cover of the book; and a published copy of the book. Included with the original first person accounts is the Memoirs of Bill Sargent. There is also one unidentified photograph of a man playing a violin.

Action Poetry : administrative files

Series consists of three subseries, which contain material relating to the planning and promotion of Action Poetry ’94. Materials in this series include internal memos, meeting minutes, proposals and correspondence with faculty, as well as media and advertising requests. The series also includes fundraising, budget and donor information.

Series consists of four subseries, which document the participants and applicants in “Action Poetry ‘94”. The series includes collected materials such as artist biographies, artist contracts and resumes. In addition, the series includes correspondence between John Sobol and the many artists considered for the program.

Action Poetry : event information

Series consists of two subseries, which contain materials relating to the actual events that made up Action Poetry ’94. The records in this series consist of scheduling information, programs, and promotional materials for Action Poetry ’94, including posters. Series also includes information regarding the Nat Christie Poetry Day at various Calgary schools, and subsequent Nat Christie Poetry Jam at the Uptown Stage and Screen.

Action Poetry : event planning and research

Series consists of three files containing background research material collected by Program Director John Sobol. Some documents detail out of town poetry events, accumulated relevant newspaper clippings, travel information, and miscellaneous research notes. Collected items are from poetry events in Vancouver, Toronto, New York, and Oregon.

Action Poetry audio recordings

Series consists of audio recordings of performances held as part of Action Poetry ‘94, as well as some studio recordings, remixes of performances, and cue sheets.

Action Poetry video recordings

Series consists of edited video recordings of performances by Action Poetry participants at the Ground Round Theatre in the Banff Centre's Theatre Complex.

Activities

The series consists of records relating to the activities of the Royal Canadian Legion Sauve Branch 235: assisting Veterans with applying for government services such as pensions and funeral expenses, and for benevolent services supplies through the Poppy Fund; Remembrance Day Services (programmes from 1980-2003), Remembrance Day essay, poetry and poster contests, and Teachers' Guides for discussion around Remembrance Day; operating the Legion Hall in partnership with the Seniors Social Club; and miscellaneous activities. Included in this series is individual applications for assistance from the Poppy Fund. There is also a publication called "Valour at Sea" which gives the history of Canada's Merchant Navy.

Activities

The series consists of newsletters, correspondence yearly schedules of activities and a brief history (1979-1981) of the Snake Valley Riding Club.
