A Christening

Present at the christening of an Indigenous child are Robert Holmes, Archdeacon Robins, Bishop George Holmes and Canon Smith. Jessie Holmes, the child, and a relative are in the front row. The picture is taken beside a Hudson Bay boat.

Christ Church Mission

A wintery walk on the road past Christ Church Mission at Shaftsbury near Peace River. Back of picture reads: Old Nookom would walk every Sunday to Church 5 miles. Many years ago when going to church she was met by a bear. Nookom climbed up a tree and the bear climbed up after her as far as he could and chewed her heel off. I have seen her foot. Ever after she always carried a knife in her belt.

Participants whose stories were recorded were Shirley Plante, Valleyview; Kathleen Evans, Fairview; Henry McAllister, Hines Creek; Michael David, Valleyview; Donna Cummings, Fairview; and Frederick (Dave) Cummings, Fairview. Also included are the planning notes, correspondence, contacts lists for 2004 and 2005.

A photograph from a trip to Nose Mountain. Ann Roberts writes on the back: "Two Cree families accompanied us on our trip. They killed out meat--moose, deer, bear, porcupine and skunk--and picked cranberries and blueberries for us. They pitched our tents and packed our horses. Last, but not least they were our guides."

The children usually rode three bareback on a horse. The babies were carried on their mothers' back."

The interview tells the story of Mary Belcourt and her mother Betsy Calliou.
