Collection consists of approximately 630 playing card sets from many parts of the world. The collection reflects not only Dr. Johnston's collecting passion but also his desire that the collection provide research material complementing resources in the Eugene Strens Recreational Mathematics Collection. During his lifetime, Dr. Johnston had also speculated on the possibility of inviting designs for University of Calgary playing cards which could be used for fund raising purposes to support the music archives collection.

The fonds consists of material found in the former Anglican Church rectory. It consists of a photograph and article on Mrs. Rhoda Mainsford Hanney of England who assisted with the Anglican Boys Hostel in the late 1930s; a photograph and article on Miss Jane Clough of England who gave money to help build the Boys and Girls Hostels in Athabasca, and a photograph of the First Athabasca Wolf Cub Pack in [1959]. In 2003, photographs were taken when new carpeting was installed in the library and archives. A recent donation of planning materials for Athabasca Pottery Discovery Day, June 21, 2009 includes correspondence, budget, itineraries, media release, and poster proofs.
