Administrative history

The Independent Order of Oddfellows, a fraternal and benevolent society, originated in Britain in the early 1800s, and from there it spread to the USA and Canada. Its aims were to elevate mens' characters, imbue them with a proper conception of good, and to teach them that all men are brothers. The order was introduced to Alberta in 1884. After 1900 lodges were established in most Alberta towns. The Grand Lodge of Alberta was established in 1905. The first Rebekah lodge for women was set up in 1907. In 1918 the company Alberta Oddfellows Temple Limited was created to manage the real estate and financial enterprises of the Grand Lodge. Junior lodges were established for boys aged twelve and up. The Rebekah Assembly sponsored the Theta Rho Girls Clubs, the first of which, the Alpha Theta Rho, was instituted in Lethbridge in 1949. The IOOF provided a congenial setting for the social activities of its members and, in addition to providing relief services for needy members, the order carried on other charitable services such as the Crippled Children's Fund and the United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth. As the membership in smaller centres decreased from the 1950s to the 1980s many lodges were closed down and their records returned to the Grand Lodge. For further information see A Woman's Touch : 100 Years of Rebekah Lodges in Alberta / Pamela M. Coombes, ed. Edmonton : Priority Printing, 2010.
