Biographical history

Howard E. Sibbald, 1865-1938, was Chief Warden for Rocky Mountains Park (Banff National Park), Alberta, Canada beginning 1909; Dominion Parks inspector until 1923; and Superintendent of Kootenay National Park from 1923 until 1932. Sibbald, son of Andrew Sibbald, was born in Ontario and came to Alberta in 1875. He was educated at Morley and later became Indian Agent there and at Gleichen. He was in business with Norman Luxton for a time before joining the National Parks service in 1909

Scope and content

Fonds consist of photographs and personal narrative of Howard Sibbald. Photographs pertain mainly to warden activities in Rocky Mountains Park, including Kananaskis area; also to Howard Sibbald and associates, park operations and services, wildlife, landscape and buildings in Rocky Mountains, Kootenay and Waterton National Parks and other parks and regions. Narrative, written 1923, describes the journey of Andrew Sibbald (author's father) and family from Stroud, Ontario to Morley, Alberta in 1875; also Howard Sibbald's life in the west during the 1870s to 1923
