History
Marie (McFetridge) Hennig was born in Burnley, Lancashire, England, in 1924 and came to Grande Prairie with her mother and father in 1926. They settled in the Crystal Creek area. She attended high school in Grande Prairie where she excelled in softball and track and field, then worked in the Bank of Montreal. She was also involved with the Stagettes Club, the Majorettes and a softball team. She married Max Henning, a WWII airforce veteran, in 1948, and they had three children: Cam, Donna, and Brenda. Marie worked at Grande Prairie town hall, then for the County, and from 1962-1992 for the Provincial Government. After Max and Marie established Mac Arabians (raising, training and showing their Arabian horses), Marie became a very experienced horse lady. She was a leader in the Gymkhana Club, the South Peace Horse Show, 4-H, and teacher of the first Grande Prairie Rodeo Queen. She rode in the Jasper Centennial Trail Ride in 1967. Marie also loved curling, bridge, golfing, and spending time with her 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Marie died of cancer July 17, 2005.
