Biographical history

Dr. George S. Martin, 1867-1932, was the Montana Blackfeet Agency's physician for 13 years. He wrote several papers discussing the horrific cases and deaths due to tuberculosis on the reservations, and he advocated for the prevention and treatment of this deadly disease. Martin was born in Missouri where he spent most of his adult life. Martin married twice, the second time to a Blackfeet woman, Alice. He died in Montana.

Custodial history

This letter was acquired by American collector Marvin L. Lince who amassed a large number of native items in the 1980s and 1990s. His collection was auctioned in 2013.

Scope and content

The item consists of letter from Martin to John I. Chambers regarding the acquisition of a knife from Crowfoot, Chief of the Blackfoot (Siksika) in southern Alberta.
