Biographical history

In 1911 George E. Fleming opened a photography business in Red Deer, Alberta. In 1936 it was purchased by Hugh A. Farthing who named it Farthing Studio. In 1947 it was purchased by Chuck Yakimchuk who renamed it Foto Arts Studio. In 1957 it was purchased by Russell Fisher and by 1960 it was named Foto Arts Studio & Color Labs Ltd. The studio remained in business until about 1991.

Custodial history

The fonds had been in the custody of Gorden Caton. The 1954 series of negatives was given to Caton by Elsie Colbourne who found it in her tailor shop which formerly housed the Foto Arts Studio.

Scope and content

The main series of the fonds consists of images of businesses, organizations, and events in Red Deer, Alberta. There is also a series consisting predominantly of portraits taken in 1954.

The pre-1947 negatives created by George E. Fleming and Hugh A. Farthing are known to have been destroyed by Chuck Yakimchuk. The current naming protocol for scanned images is as follows: fonds# - file# - envelope# - item#, i.e. mg-306-3-19-2. The box number is not used.<br><br>Record No. MG 306<br><br>
