Biographical history

In 1996, the Jewish Archives and Historical Society of Northern Alberta was founded with Uri Rosenzweig as its first president. The initial focus of JAHSENA was to collect material to publish a book chronicling the 1993 centenary of Jewish life in Edmonton and a committee was formed to further this goal. Starting in 1996, advertisements were placed in community newspapers soliciting community, subject and family histories. By 1999, enough material had been collected to begin compiling the book and Uri Rosenzweig was selected as editor. Funding for the project came from a variety of sources, most significantly the Dr. Dianne and Irving Kipnes Foundation. In 2000, the book The First Century of Jewish Life in Edmonton and Northern Alberta, 1893- 1993 was published by the JAHSENA in a limited edition of 750. Copies of the monograph were sold directly by JAHSENA and through Edmonton and Northern Alberta Area booksellers.
