Administrative history
In 1987, Ukrainian Canadians in Edmonton, Alberta, established the Festival ’88 non-profit organization in order to plan, fund, and host a number of events celebrating the 1000 year anniversary of Christianity being adopted in Ukraine. The festival was funded by the federal, provincial, and municipal governments in addition to a variety of private sponsors. Events took place in Edmonton and Vegreville from June 30th to July 3rd, 1988, and the non-profit organization was dissolved in 1989.
Festival ’88 events included live dance and music performances, displays of Ukrainian art, a Beerfest, contemporary Ukrainian Music Awards, and a variety of outreach events. Thousands of visitors and performers from across Canada and the United States took place in the festivities.
Custodial history
Russell Sawchuk served as the Director of Finance on the Festival ’88 Board of Directors, and donated his records including photographs, brochures, press releases, board minutes, contracts, and financial statements relating to the event.
