History

In 1987, Ukrainian Canadians in Edmonton, Alberta, established the Festival ’88 non-profit organization in order to plan, fund, and host a number of events celebrating the 1000 year anniversary of Christianity being adopted in Ukraine. The festival was funded by the federal, provincial, and municipal governments in addition to a variety of private sponsors. Events took place in Edmonton and Vegreville from June 30th to July 3rd, 1988, and the non-profit organization was dissolved in 1989.

Festival ’88 events included live dance and music performances, displays of Ukrainian art, a Beerfest, contemporary Ukrainian Music Awards, and a variety of outreach events. Thousands of visitors and performers from across Canada and the United States took place in the festivities.
