History

Edmonton Human Ecologists and Home Economists in Business was a professional organization of university graduates. Its aim was to maintain high standards of professional ethics, practice and competence in human ecology and home economics, and to help individuals and families to make the best use of their resources. The organization’s field of interest covered money management, consumer education, food and nutrition, housing, clothing, textiles, health care, family behavior and human development. The association lobbied governments and universities regarding areas of concern with respect to the well-being of individuals and families. In addition, the organization supported students studying at the University of Alberta by offering a mentorship program and scholarships.

The organization was run by an executive of volunteers made up of a President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Program Chair, Newsletter Chair and Social Chair. Luncheon meetings and occasional dinner meetings were held five to eight times per year and mainly featured networking and speakers for the purpose of continuing education.

The organization was formed in the fall of 1975 under the name of Edmonton Home Ecologists in Business. In 2002, this name was changed to become Edmonton Human Ecologists and Home Economists in Business to reflect changes at the University of Alberta to incorporate a program in human ecology. The organization dissolved in 2009.
