Administrative history

The East Milo Juniors, initially referred to as the Milo-Queenstown Local, was the first chapter in the Junior United Farmers of Alberta, created in 1919. The UFA formed the Junior Section to “train those between the ages of 14 and 25 in citizenship and leadership”, as well as to provide opportunities for social interaction. This led to the development of University Farm Young People’s Week, a time for group members to be together at the University of Alberta, where they convened an annual meeting of their provincial executive, and participated in debates and track meets, as well as other sporting events.

Through pie and box socials, dances and bridge parties, the East Milo Juniors raised funds which were used to purchase sporting equipment and to send delegates to the annual convention. Proceeds from the Basket Social in December, 1934, were used to support several charitable causes, including the Red Cross. The Juniors also hosted and attended lectures and art displays, hosted local debates and an annual banquet, produced a newsletter called “The Tattler”, created and exhibited handicrafts, put on concerts and Chautauquas for the community at large, and participated in community clean-ups and plantings.

In 1932, the East Milo Juniors, along with the Arrowwood Juniors and the Johnny Canucks formed an organization called the Marquis Athletic Club. The club hosted an annual sports meet with competitions in baseball, softball, track and field and basketball.
