Biographical history

Dorothy Winnifred Allen, 1908-1990, was born in Upper Cape, New Brunswick. She served as the food editor for the Toronto Globe and Mail from 1957 until 1974. Her cookbook, Fare Exchange, was awarded a silver medal at the 1964 World Culinary Olympics in Frankfurt, Germany. For many years she lived in Calgary, Alberta where she was active in the Calgary Canadian Citizenship Council, Ladies Auxiliary of the Calgary General Hospital and the 1988 Winter Olympics. She was awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee medal in 1977. She and her husband, Charles Ernest Gray, 1909-1999, had two children, Dorothy Helen, ?-2012, and Allen.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of correspondence regarding newspaper columns and publications; reference files relating to food preparation; correspondence and news clippings about the Citizenship Council; and photographs of an ethnic fashion show. Also includes school report cards, projects and identification cards of her daughter, Dorothy H. Gray.
