Biographical history

Doris Kensit was born in Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay) in 1904. She moved to Jasper in 1924 where she met her husband Harry, a machinist who had worked for the Canadian National Railway since 1922. In 1929, Doris began to work for Major Fred Brewster, the guide, outfitter and entrepreneur who operated Rocky Mountain Camps out of a town office and the Jasper Park Lodge. Doris ran the office and was in charge of booking all the activities. In order to knowledgably market the tours, Doris went on numerous backcountry trips, both summer and winter, including the Skyline Trail, Tonquin Valley, Black Cat Ranch, Maligne and Medicine Lakes. In 1938, Doris was also one of the first group of women known to have skied in the Columbia Icefields area. Doris worked for Fred Brewster until 1963 when the business was sold, after which she worked for the Park Information Centre. Doris died in 1994.
