Daryl Katz was born in 1961 in Edmonton, Alberta. His father, Barry Katz, graduated as a pharmacist, and founded Value Drug Mart in Edmonton, Alberta in the 1970s. He married Ida Shugarman of Calgary. Daryl Katz attended Talmud Torah School, Jasper Place High School and the University of Alberta, graduating with an arts degree in 1982 and with a law degree in 1985. He articled with Shoctor, Mousseau and Starkman and circa 1992 he founded his own company, Katz Group Inc., and by 2008 the company had taken over approximately 1800 retail drug stores in Canada and the United States, renaming them as Medicine Shoppe or Rexall pharmacies. He built a 20,000 square foot home in Edmonton in the Valleyview area, which was completed in 2005, and also owns a home in Palm Springs, California. An Oilers fan since childhood, in February of 2008, he bought the Edmonton Oilers from the Edmonton Investors Group for $200 million. He is one of the 500 wealthiest people in Canada. He is married to Renee Katz (nee Gouin), and they have two children. He has two younger sisters, Shelley and Alyssa.
