Administrative history
On May 14, 1914, wet natural gas sprayed out of the well bore at the Calgary Petroleum Products No. 1 Well. This discovery of petroleum led to the development of Alberta's first natural gas processing plant. Located 60 km south of Calgary, the Turner Valley Gas Plant is a tangible symbol of the development of the Turner Valley Oilfield, western Canada’s first commercial petroleum producer.
The earliest form of the Turner Valley Gas Plant was the first petroleum processing facility west of Ontario. Through three separate stages of development, between World War I and the late 1940s, the processing plant at Turner Valley served as the largest natural gas processing plant in Canada's largest oilfield.
These seven photographs are believed to depict the aftermath of a fire that took place at a Dalhousie Oil refinery in Okotoks, Alberta in the 1920s.
Custodial history
These photographs were purchased by an Alberta Culture staff member in 2011 and were gifted to the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 2012.
Scope and content
The collection consists of seven photographs. Five of the seven photographs in the record appear to show evidence of a fire that took place at a Dalhousie Oil refinery in Okotoks, Alberta. One image depicts a smoldering refinery, while four others depict vehicles damaged in the incident. Two of the seven photographs are of unknown provenance, and each feature a matching decorative border. One of these photographs depicts a street scene from the 1920’s, and the other eight airplanes lined up in a row.
