Biographical history
Clayton Hare, 1909-2001, was born in St. Catherines, Ontario and was educated there, in Buffalo and at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto. He also studied music in New York and London. Returning to Canada he taught at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick until he moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1945 to teach at Mount Royal College. He conducted the Calgary Symphony Orchestra after its revival in 1949 until 1955 when he moved to the University of Portland, where he resided until 1965. After teaching at Boston University, 1965-1967, and the University of Maine, 1967-1970, he returned to Calgary. He married Dorothy Louise Swetnam, 1911-2002, a pianist who was very active in the musical community in Calgary.

The fonds consists of programs of musical events in Calgary and Alberta; photographs of the Calgary Symphony Orchestra; and newspaper clippings re musical events in the city.
