Biographical history

Abraham Chetner came to Alberta from Bessarabia in 1912 and homesteaded at Sibbald. His wife, Rachel Lechovitzsky Caplan, came to Calgary from Shedrin, Russia, in 1923. Their son, Jack, was born and raised in Calgary, and moved to Edmonton in 1954, where he met and married Sylvia Dattner, also of Calgary. Sylvia's grandparents had homesteaded in Rumsey, arriving in 1904. Jack Chetner was Principal of the Edmonton Talmud Torah for 20 years until his resignation in 1972. He continued to work in Hebrew education and real estate until his retirement in 1992. Jack is a Board member of the Jewish Archives and Historical Society of Edmonton and Northern Alberta. Sylvia received her degree in librarianship in 1974 and worked as Director of the Health Sciences Library at the University of Alberta until 1994.
